South African jazz sensation Gqamile Mbuyazi, popularly known as GQ, is gearing up for a special fundraising concert to secure his place at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. The multi-instrumentalist, who has already made waves in the local music scene, is set to take his talent to the global stage with this next big step in his career.
GQ’s musical journey began at just three years old when he picked up the violin, quickly mastering it to achieve a Trinity Grade 8 distinction. His passion later shifted to the piano, where he earned another Grade 8 distinction in Jazz Piano within just four years. His skills don't stop there—GQ also plays the marimba, drums, and trumpet, showcasing his remarkable versatility and dedication.
Currently a first-year music student at the University of Cape Town and a recent matriculant, GQ has earned a coveted spot at Berklee. However, the financial hurdle of tuition is a challenge he is determined to overcome through a series of fundraising concerts.
The first of these concerts will take place in Johannesburg on Friday, 27 September 2024, at 18:00 at the Chris Seabrooke Music Hall, WITS University. Attendees can expect an impressive display of GQ’s talents as he performs on the piano, trumpet, drums, and violin.
“Berklee College of Music offers an ambitious environment for me to hone my skills and gain invaluable international experience,” says GQ. “With the support of my community, I believe I can make this dream a reality and bring my music to a global audience.”
