THIS WEEK'S EPISODE OF AFRICA NOW RADIO: LOOTLOVE CHATS TO SKIIBII

Nigerian Afropop star Skiibii joins LootLove via FaceTime on Apple Music 1 to talk about his latest track, “Baddest Boy (Remix) [feat. Davido].” He also discusses the creative process behind his first EP, ‘God Is Bigger Than Man,’ and how he manages life in the public eye.

SKIIBII ON WORKING WITH DAVIDO

After I dropped the EP, Davido hit me up in the DM that he wants to be on the remix of “Baddest Boy” and I like that, because he’s bad too! So I’m like, we’re the baddest boys now.

Immediately we got into the studio, it took us like 15 minutes to do that verse. Immediately when we finished the verse I stood up and shook his hand, like “I’ll see you on the video day!” He was just smiling like “Yes! See you soon, so get ready!”

We shot the video, quick release, no stress. Davido is a very wonderful guy, very blessed and talented, we finished the video and he didn’t even leave. We were there chilling like we were at home. The vibe was organic - it’s not forced, it’s original. When you are on the same page with whoever you are collaborating with, it helps everything.

SKIIBII ON NEW SINGLE “TRENCHES”

“Trenches” means a lot to me. I understand that life in the trenches is not easy, [for] the people there in the ghetto, because I actually came from there.

When I dropped the song, the first day people started saying “You are not in the trenches, you just bought a Maybach 600, what are you saying?” “You just bought three cars, what’s wrong with you? Why are you trying to cap?” I’m like yo, this song is not for me. This song is for the people in the hood, the people that are still hustling, trying to make it out of the trenches.

I have to define it to them, to tell them that your “trenches” is your starting point, so everybody’s got one. We’re praying to God to get out, to make it out and make some bread.

SKIIBII ON PLANS TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC MONTHLY

Me, I’m a single guy. I always like to drop singles back-to-back, one after the other, that I always take my time. People always complain that Skiibii always comes once in a while, drop a hit song and go back in, so I promised them last December that if I start now, I’m not going to stop. After this EP, I’m going to come back-to-back-to-back.

If they allow me, I’m going to drop every month, and I’m ready but my manager and everybody is saying “Don’t rush them” so ok, let’s wait… so I’m gonna give these two months for collaborations to drop, then I’m back again to my back-to-back.

Tune in and listen to the full episode this today, April 3rd at 2p Lagos/London / 3p Johannesburg/Paris / 6a LA / 9a NYC on Apple Music 1 at apple.co/_AfricaNow
